Practical introduction to the management of strategic projects
Masterclass: Project Management for Executive Requests
Strategic projects are usually initiated quite spontaneously by executives and board members in order to obtain results on particularly important topics at short notice, with the highest quality. Based on sometimes inaccurate descriptions, presentations are to be developed, prototypes built, problems solved or evaluations conducted to help the company in difficult times or to support management in decision-making.
Particularly in uncertain economic times, board members and managing directors, who act in the area of conflict between vision and feasibility, often have to change priorities on a daily basis and provide new impetus to the team. Decisions have to be made quickly, even though many stakeholders with different interests are involved in the decision-making process. This pressure is passed on to project managers, who then have to meet the requests and put the plan into action in the shortest possible time. The pressure associated with the enormous expectations of superiors makes it necessary not only to perfect, but above all to adapt classic project management in order to successfully complete even such strategic projects.
Dr. Michael Perscheid, as SAP chair deputy of Prof. Dr. h.c. mult. Hasso Plattner at the Hasso Plattner Institute, and VP for Chairman and Strategic Projects at SAP, can look back on many years of practical experience as a project manager for one of Germany’s top managers.
Rich in experience, he might have done one or two things differently today, but he would also have kept many things the same; after all, that’s what allowed him to climb the career ladder. Looking back, he might have done one or two things differently today, or even better. At the same time, his success proves him right, and he now shares the wealth of experience he has gained over the years exclusively in the Masterclass at the HPI Academy.
